GCSE PE students, Sports Leaders and members of the Key Stage 3 Leadership Academy were treated to an inspirational presentation recently by Saleha Williams, Head of the London 2012 Inspire Programme.
Following an introduction by Mr Currie where he highlighted the significance of the Games returning to London next year as well as the importance of the seven Olympic and Paralympic Values (Friendship, Respect, Excellence, Determination, Inspiration, Courage and Equality) Saleha was warmly welcomed to Harrow Way School.
Saleha began her presentation by showing the students how Great Britain won the bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Part of winning this bid was the promise of leaving a legacy for young people. She then inspired them with amazing sporting film footage and images of the new Olympic Park. Did you know that the Olympic Park is the size of 357 football pitches? (Check out the London 2012 board by the Gym if you want to know more amazing facts!).
Saleha also spoke to the students about how they can become involved in the Games and answered many excellent questions: ‘I am so excited to be talking to you all about London 2012 because the Games are for everyone, not just for those in London. Weymouth, which is close by, will be hosting the sailing competition, so Dorset and Hampshire will be an exciting area for Olympic sailors’.
Following the presentation, Year 9 Silver Ambassadors, Jordan Simcox and Anthony Wharton, were keen to share with Saleha the work of Harrow Way students. After a truly inspirational afternoon, we look forward to welcoming Saleha to our school again in the near future.
