Harrow Way Catering students were put through their culinary paces following a masterclass from BCoT (Basingstoke College of Technology) Chef Lecturer Justin Mundy. While delivering an advanced baking lesson the further education specialist gave an insight into life as a college student, the opportunities for study at BCoT and the realities of working as a professional chef.
Working with Year 9 students, Chef Mundy taught a number of cake decorative techniques including piping and craquelin as well as some professional know-how on the different methods to get the all-important cake rise.
Commenting on the value of the guest lecture, Miss E Alm, Curriculum Leader Design and Technology said: “The students found their time with Chef Mundy hugely beneficial on a number of levels. They thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of learning a number of new baking and decorating techniques and being given some brilliant hints and tips from a professional chef who has worked in the catering industry for the past 20 years. It was also great for them to hear what it would be like to study catering at the next level and the career opportunities this could lead to.”
The BCoT masterclass is the second expert guest to recently work with Harrow Way
Catering students. The initiative is part of the School’s programme of careers activity which has been designed to ensure all students have access to a high-quality careers programme, are provided with opportunities for work experience and receive tailored support.
