Thursday 29th January, Venue: John Hanson School
We took a team of seven boys from Years 8 and 7 for what was originally planned as a 7-a-side tournament. However, when we arrived, due to the popularity of the sport it was decided to make it 11-a-side. Our team sat out the first game in which Winton were victorious over John Hanson. The cold, wet and windy conditions were made were by piercing sleet showers driving across the pitch! Our first match was against Winton. A spirited performance by our boys, who were joined by four players from John Hanson, eventually resulted in a 0 – 2 loss.; our inexperience on a full size AstroTurf was evident, although there was marked improvement as our players adapted during the second half.
For our second match, against John Hanson, both teams decided to revert to 7-a-side on a smaller pitch. The game that followed was exciting and highly competitive, both teams playing with high energy and excellent sporting attitudes. Although we took the lead fairly early on, the experience of the John Hanson players occasionally proved too strong and with two minutes left John Hanson were 6 – 4 in the lead. A late goal brought the scores to within one and we piled on the pressure to try to equalize before the final whistle. Unfortunately a break away goal in the last few seconds restored John Hanson’s two goal lead and the final score was 5 – 7.
A very enjoyable and worthwhile event. Well done to all those who played.
