On Friday 15th June the Maths department welcomed the Enigma Project to HWCS. For more information click on this link (http://enigma.maths.org/). Higher ability year 9 and 10 students were led through a brief history of codebreaking that included Spartan slaves having messages tattooed on their heads, Julius Caesar’s Cipher, Mary Queen of Scots plot to assassinate Elizabeth I, and finished with a demonstration of an actual World War II German Enigma Machine. Â
The follow up sessions were an opportunity to crack some codes themselves with some particularly fiendish codes that challenged staff as well as students. Those involved were outstanding representatives of the school and we would like to thank James Grime from the Enigma Project for an fantastic morning.
