Nearly fifty Year 3 and 4 very excited pupils from Portway Junior and Appleshaw St Peter’s CE Primary Schools arrived at Harrow Way School, eager to play lots of football in the annual Year 3 and 4 Lions Community Football Festival. The teams were looked after, led and managed by Year 10 students Abby Wheeler, Anthony Wharton, Atlanta Wilson, Jake Williams, Ashley McGuire and Ashley Fairman.
After warming up and a welcome by the organisers, Cathy Devereux (Lions in the Community), Katie Woolf (ex Harrow Way student) and Rhonda Sturges (Harrow Way School Sport Coordinator), the teams set off to their pitches, keen to have fun and play football.
Eight YA students who work closely with Lions in the Community Manager, Cathy Devereux, (including Year 11 Harrow Way students Tom Longshaw, Luke Bourner and Jordan Compton) were excellent at refereeing, timekeeping, pitch marshalling and running the lines.
It was also a pleasure to welcome Briony Lewis from Simplyhealth, who presented the certificates, medals and trophies.
All the players were congratulated on their excellent play – the best ever seen in a Year 3/4 festival! Runners up receiving Silver medals were Portway Blue with Appleshaw receiving the Gold medals and the winner’s trophy. The Fair Play trophy was presented to Portway Blue – a unanimous choice by the referees and linesmen!
A final ‘Congratulations!’ to Abby and Anthony who, through leading at the festival, completed their Level 1 Sports Leaders assessment.
