Thirty Year 1 children from Portway Infant School, Knights Enham Infant School and Appleshaw St Peter’s CE Primary School arrived keen and excited at the Harrow Way Sports Hall on Friday.
They were met by eight enthusiastic Year 9 students Alice Walker, Shannon Nixon, Stacey Evans, Courtney Anderson, Chloe Baird, Ashton McKillop, Sophie Pitts and Amy Roberts. Earlier in the day, the students had set up the Sports Hall, planned how they were going to lead the activities and organised their roles.
The afternoon started with the ‘Bean Game’ warm up where the Year 1 showed the Year 9s their great starting positions (1, 2, chill my shoulders!) as well as their Runner, Jumping, Broad, String and Baked Beans!
The Hoop Game, Tri Golf, Cross the Swampy River, Treasure Cones, Target Throw and the favourite, Throwing the Javelin, were then expertly led by the Year 9 students, encouraging good team work, sending positions and friendship at all times.
After a short break, the relay races started with bean bags being sent accurately into buckets, great running and jumping over hurdles and super turning on the reversaboards. Everyone was amazed that the children were only Year 1!
It was a lovely afternoon with the final event being the Javelin final. Excellent throws by all but a special ‘Congratulations’ to Solomon from Knights Enham Infant School who threw the javelin nearly 20 metres! A future Olympian?
Mr Hudson and Mr Currie presented the certificates to all the children and thanked everyone for their support and leadership.
Miss Sturges, SSCo Harrow Way Community School, would also like to thank all the children for their enthusiasm and efforts. She commented: “When I witness high quality leadership inspiring and enthusing younger children, it makes me very proud. Well done to all the Year 9 Leaders from Harrow Way School!â€
