The sun continued to shine at the start of the 2010 Town Schools’ Football Tournament, hosted again by Harrow Way School. Sparsholt College 2nd year Sports Students, with guidance from Rhonda Sturges, School Sport Coordinator, and Sam Vokes of Sparsholt College, organised and coordinated the whole event which ran smoothly from start to finish.
Harrow Way Year 10 Sports Leaders, Lucy May, Danny Tuson, Robbie Skeates, Sam Catton, Vikki Joliffe, Charlotte Mead, Jessica Darmanin, Kiaya Walters and Charlotte Quarrier, supported the event while Lions in the Community Manager, Cathy Devereux, kindly provided the referees.
Participating teams were from Portway Junior, Anton Junior, Vigo Junior, Roman Way, Andover CE, St John the Baptist, Rookwood, Whitchurch, and Balksbury Junior Schools and the competition was closely contested from start to finish.
All teams played in an exceptionally sporting manner, but the overall Fair Play winners were Vigo B (maximum points – well done!) and Rookwood.
After two nail biting semi finals which saw Portway beat Balksbury, and Whitchurch edge through against Anton A following extra time and penalties, Portway came through as the eventual winners with a 3-0 win over Whitchurch. The whole tournament was played in excellent spirit and the teams were all a credit to their schools! Well done to all involved, not least the supporting staff and parents!
Rhonda Sturges added: “A huge thank you to Cathy Devereux and her Lions in the Community coaches for their continued support of the Andover and District Football Tournaments, as well as for all their work in the community. It would not be the same without you! Thank you too to the Harrow Way students who supported both events, and a very special thank you to the Sparsholt students who worked amazingly hard to ensure the Town Schools’ Tournament was a success – a huge well done to them!â€
