Much noise and excitement could be heard from both the Sports Hall and Gym on Tuesday after school. Why? The annual Andover Town Schools’ Basketball Competition was back!
Â
Over seventy Year 5 and 6 pupils from Portway Junior, Andover CE, Vigo, Anton, St Johns and Rookwood Schools were welcomed in the Sports Hall before the girls headed off to the Gym for their competition with volunteers Alice Kilford and Steph Jackson. Harry Crockford, Sian Sorenson, Steph Villiers and Alice Longshaw volunteered to help Miss Escritt run the boys’ competition through refereeing and scoring.
Â
32 matches were then played, the girls as part of a league (and no final results were being revealed to anyone!) and the boys in two pools, play offs and a grand final!
Â
During the presentation Miss Sturges praised all the girls’ teams for the very high standard of competitive play this year and thanked Ali and Steph – they had made a hard job look easy; so well done to them! Ali presented Anton with their runners up certificates and Portway with their winner’s medals.
Â
Miss Escritt said to the boys, “Well done for your high level of play which produced some great matches and thank you for your excellent sportsmanship. You should all be very proud of yourselves.” Positions were then shared, certificates distributed and, as a result of the close and exciting final between St Johns and Portway B, Portway were able to receive the winner’s medals, with St Johns the runners up.
Â
Miss Escritt and Miss Sturges would like to thank all the young people for taking part, all the many teachers and parents who supported the event and the six young Harrow Way volunteers who did a fantastic job. Well done to you all!
