Harrow Way hosted the annual district basketball competition.
Harrow Way were the current holders of the title and were hoping to retain their crown.
First up were John Hanson v Winton. Winton got off to a flying start with a resounding 28-2 victory. The Harrow Way team was able to watch this match and hence started to formulate their strategies and tactics, having the advantage of being able to ‘suss out’ the opposition.
A confident Harrow Way team then had to play against John Hanson and right from the start they took control of the game with their sharp shooting and controlled passing. Steph Jackson marshalled the team like a good captain should and Anna Bazzoni and Cathy Murray brought the ball up the court finding gaps for the team to be able to shoot.
During the match we were able to bring on some of the Year 7 players who slotted in comfortably and never looked out of place, even though they were a year younger than many of the other players.
Jess Wilson was impressive with her speed of play and control when dribbling the ball whilst Lydia Moulding passed the ball around with confidence and accuracy. Ella Howells made some great interceptions and Anna-Leigh Brookes was ever accurate under the basket.
Harrow Way were the eventual winners. 24 – 0
The last match of the evening saw Harrow Way v Winton and both teams knew the victor would be the winner of the overall competition. It was a repeat of last year’s competition and Harrow Way knew Winton were up for revenge for the last minute win they had the previous year.
So, with that in mind, Harrow Way entered the court focused and determined to win.
It started a little fast and furious, but once Harrow Way settled their nerves and stuck to their game plan their superiority started to show. Harrow Way played a possession game, not too much dribbling but lots of movement and tight passing. We knew this was a must if we were to win the match.
Eventually we wore down the Winton defence and started to score some baskets never really allowing the Winton attack to get going. Anna Bazzoni was outstanding in defence and managed to keep the Winton attack under control, whilst Steph Jackson and Alice Longshaw put the baskets away at the other end.
Amelia Carter was as reliable as ever in defence and linked the defence well with the attack and even managed to score a couple of baskets. Charlotte Knight also made a valuable contribution to the team. Final score 18-0
Miss Escritt was extremely impressed with the team, not only with the way that they played but with the way that they conducted themselves and worked so well as a whole squad.
Brilliant!!
