The Year 10 Scientists were recently given an insight into the nature of radiation and radioactivity, highlighting the need for safety, monitoring and shielding by Mr Williams and Mr Manello, who work in the Radiology Safety and Monitoring unit of the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), Aldermaston. Seen in the picture are two volunteer radiation workers from Year 10 undergoing radiation contamination monitoring.
AWE are keen to present and demonstrate to schools the safety, dangers and uses of radioactive substances in order to enhance students’ awareness and understanding for the new GCSE core science curriculum introduced for the first time this year. The presentation was aptly timed as Year 10 students were having their GCSE Unit 3 examination the following day! – what better revision!
